The Canadian Arctic is under increased threat. Conservatives have common sense solutions to protect our sovereignty, contribute to NORAD continental security, and secure all of our borders.
A Conservative government will double the size of the 1st Patrol Group of the Canadian Rangers, acquire two additional polar icebreakers for the Royal Canadian Navy (on top of two for the Coast Guard), and establish our first permanent Arctic base since the Cold War at Canadian Forces Base Iqaluit. This base will help develop Iqaluit as a northern centre, and serve as a forward operating location for Canadian F-35 fighters and P-8 Poseidon aircraft.
Conservatives will also expedite NORAD modernization including refueling aircraft, new submarines, tactical helicopters, a new satellite ground station and other enhancements to Canadian forward operating locations in Inuvik, Goose Bay and Yellowknife.
